Outreach Teams

How can your team get Involved? Contact us at teamsmalaysia@gmail.com

What a joy to work with children and youth! If your team has a heart for working with the young ones, this can take on many forms during your outreach. For example; working with handicapped/disabled children, helping in an orphanage, tutoring/teaching less fortunate school children, helping run youth service at a local church, facilitating an art and craft time with poor children…just to list a few!

As you will soon come to find, Penang is full of all sorts of religions and houses of worship that are constantly lifting up prayers to other gods. There are also many injustices happening on the streets, in homes, in government, well, everywhere!

You will also see so many foreign workers here and unfortunately too many of them are being treated unjustly! Penang needs Jesus!! Your team could strategically intercede for “His kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth JUST AS IT IS IN HEAVEN” by driving or walking the streets of Penang while praying. His arm is not too short to save!

Kawan means ‘friend’ in Bahasa Malay, which is exactly what this ministry is, a friend to the

friendless, the drug addicts, the sex-workers, the homeless and destitute.

Kawan is located in our downtown area and is open three days a week, it provides meals, clothes, showers, a resting area, connections to many social services, but most importantly a place that people can hear about Jesus.

Many teams have come and help pour into the rejected ones of Penang and loved it.

At least 1 in every 4 workers in Malaysia is foreign. Close to 2 million documented workers and an estimated equal 2 million undocumented, most of which come from other South East Asian countries. There are also over 100,000 refugees from over 40 countries, but over 80% are from Burma. Many of these people have found Malaysia to be a place that they have been cheated by their employers, the government, the police and their agents, coupled with horrible living conditions and either unfair wages, or no wages at all!

BUT Jesus is reaching out to these people through His Body here! You can come and help with our vibrant Nepali ministry, or come preach at an Indonesian church or come and share your faith with a Bangladeshi worker and hand him a Bible in his own language

Does your team love sports? Your team could use it’s passion for sports as a way to build relationships with locals! This could be in the context of helping run a sports camp for a week or running at the local park and taking an opportunity to strike up a conversation with another jogger. Or even bringing your skateboard to the local youth park and connecting with the youth!

One of the ways that you could minister in Penang is to teach English! You could teach children or Vietnamese migrants or the Orang Asli (Malaysia’s indigenous people). This is a great way to build relationships and get to know locals as well as foreign workers! For teams that will be here for at least one month.

Penang House of Prayer (PenHOP) is located in our downtown area, walking distance from the YWAM base. Our base and PenHOP have a heart to see intercession and missions dynamically come together! PenHOP is strategically located on the “Power Line”.

If you were to draw a straight line south-west from PenHOP you would first hit our State’s High Court, just past that is the first Anglican church in South East Asia, then if you keep drawing your “line” you would hit the oldest Chinese temple and the oldest Hindu temple and the oldest mosque in Penang! PenHOP is interceding for justice, revival and salvation to pour out in Penang in all 7 spheres of society! Come be a part of the almost daily intercession and worship times!

Malaysia is made up of 13 states, we praise the Lord that YWAM is currently in 4 states. However, it’s not enough! Our heart and vision as YWAM Malaysia is to see a YWAM presence in all 13 states! If you have a heart and passion to see God’s Kingdom expanded through ground-breaking intercession, we would love to have your team come and intercede through some of our states!

Your team would also have the chance to share with the local churches throughout Malaysia and get to powerfully encourage them as they serve their community! Ideally we would want a team to spend about a week per state, so you could cover up to 6 states during your outreach. Would be ideal for SOIP teams.

There are many women and transvestites that have become victims of the sex industry in our downtown area. Although many of these sex workers would like to find another way to make a living, many cannot. We have a heart to reach out and since 2009 we have been going out to the streets and building relationships with these precious people that Jesus jealously loves. We are currently doing this every Wednesday night, we have plans to see this ministry grow, who knows, maybe you can come and help it grow!

As you know, Jesus can speak to the hearts of individuals through dramas or dances or art or performances. You could share in this way on a Sunday morning at a local church or on the streets! There is definitely a place for creatively sharing the Lord’s heart in Penang.
